It was the big question heading into Wednesday's historic victory in Mexico City: How would the U.S. defense, with 19 caps' worth of experience on the back line between them, handle a high-flying El Tri squad boasting one of world soccer's greatest home-field advantages?

As it turned out, unbelievably well.

Second-half subs Brek Shea, Terrence Boyd and goal scorer Michael Orozco Fiscal will long be remembered for combining on the 80th-minute winner, but the makeshift back four that kept the powerful Mexicans off the scoresheet deserve even more praise.
