Minors: Mike Montgomery nearly ready

April, 7, 2011
It has been fairly well documented how deep the Kansas City Royals' farm system is at the moment, with a number of interesting starting pitching arms included in that group. I'd take southpaw Mike Montgomery over any of them, assuming good health; the 21-year-old has put himself on our radar screen for impact this season.

Montgomery, the 36th overall pick in the 2008 draft out of a California high school, posted a 2.06 ERA over 153 innings his first two years as a pro -- all at Class A ball or lower -- with 132 strikeouts, 48 walks and just three homers allowed.
