Brandon Beachy, SP, Atlanta Braves: Beachy got thrust into the fire for a spot start in the heat of a playoff race Monday, going 4 1/3 innings on short notice. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2008, Beachy has accelerated through the minors thanks to advanced control and command -- though that wasn't necessarily in evidence Monday night -- and started adding some strikeouts to the mix this season with an improved changeup. Beachy has spent time as a starter and as a reliever and is the kind of pitcher who consistently must hit his spots instead of blowing hitters away with raw stuff. He does have the makings of a plus changeup with good sink and fade and a solid curveball to go with his low-90s fastball.
