The way Kansas City Royals prospect Mike Montgomery had pitched since turning pro, it seemed that only injury woes would slow his progression. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened.

Montgomery, the 36th overall pick in the 2008 draft out of a California high school, posted a 2.06 ERA over 153 innings in his first two years as a pro -- all at Class A ball or lower -- striking out 132, walking 48 and allowing just three homers, and he struck out 33 and walked just four with a 1.09 ERA in four Class A starts to open this season. That earned him a quick promotion to Double-A, where he posted a 2.79 ERA in six starts.
