Minors: Pineda moving up prospect ranks

June, 24, 2010
A little more than a month ago, I profiled Mike Trout, who had shot up prospect lists as a hitter this season. Well, the Seattle Mariners' Michael Pineda is doing the same thing among pitchers.

The 21-year-old didn't get much attention before the season started, largely because of an elbow problem that limited him to just 47 1/3 innings last year, all but three of them at high Class A. However, he was dominant when he did pitch, with a 52-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and he was coming off a 2008 stateside debut (after two years in the Dominican Summer League) that saw him post a sub-2.00 ERA in 138 innings in the low Class A Midwest League, with 128 strikeouts and just 35 walks.

To see Jason's full profile on talented Mariners prospect Michael Pineda and his updated top 10 prospects for the remainder of 2010, you must be an ESPN Insider.
