Heyward slumping, but still developing

June, 11, 2010
Just as one 20-year-old rookie outfielder, Mike Stanton, makes his big league debut this week, let's check in on another 20-year-old rookie outfielder who has been with his club since Opening Day.

Jason Heyward still has an OPS above .900 entering Friday's games despite an 8-for-41 stretch this month that has dropped his average 15 points to .272. In fact, he tied a major league record on June 4 by striking out five times in a nine-inning game. But considering the opposing pitchers in that game were Clayton Kershaw, Hong-Chih Kuo and Jonathan Broxton, there's not as much shame in that as it might seem on first glance.

To see Jason's full scouting and fantasy evaluation of Jason Heyward, you must be an ESPN Insider.
