Minors: Scheppers on the fast track

Tanner Scheppers' stuff was not the reason he fell to the Texas Rangers and the 44th pick in the 2009 draft; on ability alone, he was viewed as one of the top starting pitchers available.

A 2008 shoulder injury scared off a lot of clubs because of the threat it could be a recurring injury (although the Pirates did pick him in the second round of the '08 draft but were unable to sign him). The Rangers stepped up and made a $1.25 million gamble on him last year, a gamble that could provide big returns.
