The sparkly new jewel in Charlotte is the NASCAR Hall of Fame

NASCAR has always prided itself on being at the forward edge of self-promotion, but it was lapped by the major team sports in one high-profile way -- it lacked an official hall of fame. Yes, the Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum has been welcoming visitors since 1965, and the International Motorsports HOF at Talladega has been inducting legends since 1990, but not until 2004 did the league begin to craft what will be its $195 million monument to stock car greatness.
