Position is everything

2/13/2011

We're now two events into the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series season, and that may not seem like much, but there are some trends forming and anglers are already positioning themselves for postseason honors and qualifications. In particular, the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race is already shaping up. Right now, Skeet Reese is looking good to duplicate his 2007 AOY season. Not coincidentally, that was the last time the Elites started in his native California.

If Reese is now the frontrunner for AOY honors, who else is still in the hunt, and, perhaps more interestingly, who's probably already out of contention? The answers — based on cold, hard statistics — might surprise you.

For starters, all of these numbers come from the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Elite seasons. I haven't gone further back than that for a couple of reasons. First of all, the seasons were notably shorter and, second, the Elite Series offers a unique format that hasn't previously been duplicated on the Bassmaster Tournament Trail.
