ESPN Insider's Craig Custance breaks down the top 50 free agents based on the opinions of sources throughout the NHL.

With free agency upon us, some of the summer's biggest names remain unsigned. After chatting with multiple sources throughout the league, I've ranked the top 50 players who had the potential to hit unrestricted free agency and those who actually reached the open market to provide a sense of what awaits NHL teams.
As players sign, we will update this list with the contract terms and the players' new teams. However, since NHL free agency is often conducted at light speed -- particularly on July 1 -- please be patient if a player's capsule is not updated immediately.
That said, here's a look at the top 50 unrestricted free agents for 2012.
