Using the VUKOTA projection system of Hockey Prospectus, Insider is taking the temperature of key players on every NHL team, continuing with the Detroit Red Wings. For a detailed explanation of Prospectus' proprietary GVT value metric, read more here.
Note: Due to the lockout, GVT scores for 2012-13 are prorated from 48 to 82 games.
Summer Skate: Detroit Red Wings
Once again, the rumors of Detroit's demise were greatly exaggerated. In 2013, the Red Wings not only made the postseason, but were on the verge of the Stanley Cup Final. The combination of an emerging star goalie in Jimmy Howard, coaching, some contributions from young players and the sheer awesomeness of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg all added up to another successful year in Hockeytown.
For 2013-14, Detroit (finally) makes its move into the Eastern Conference. This year, the detractors might be a little quieter as general manager Ken Holland has beefed up his top six. And with Datsyuk and Zetterberg still going strong, this team won't be much fun for its new foes.
