Cup Scouting Report: Red Wings
Opponents provide breakdown on how to battle, beat Detroit
Craig Custance chats with rival scouts and players to break down the strengths and weaknesses of the Detroit Red Wings.
The extension of their incredible playoff streak to 22 consecutive seasons is impressive, but that wasn't the focus in the Red Wings' dressing room. The focus was making the playoffs, because that's the time of year they enjoy competing the most.
It's all they know.
"That's why you work all summer, you work all year to get in the playoffs to have a chance to win the Cup," said captain Henrik Zetterberg. "I don't think it's so much about the streak, it's more that we want to be in the playoffs."
Now that they're there, they have a favorable matchup with a Ducks team that is offensively gifted but not the deepest defensive team in the tournament. It beats playing Chicago or even a team like St. Louis or Los Angeles.
Said one Western Conference scout of the Red Wings: "I don't know if they could beat Chicago, but they could beat Anaheim."
