Lost season could halt Hall passes
Lockout could severely hurt Hall of Fame cases for veterans
As the lockout enters its third week, players and owners are posturing in a way that suggests the entire 2012-13 season may be lost. Some owners may believe that outcome may be worthwhile to get the CBA deal they want, and some players may think the same. But a lost season would certainly cost some players more than others, not only in terms of money but also in terms of their legacy.
For hockey standouts like Teemu Selanne, Daniel Alfredsson and Jarome Iginla, losing a whole season won't impact their chances at being inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame -- they are likely shoo-ins. Others face a more daunting climb towards enshrinement.
Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St. Louis turns 37 years old this upcoming season and has amassed 852 points over a 13-year career. Will that be enough? What about goalie Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres, who has 252 wins and a Vezina Trophy? How about Ottawa Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who has a Stanley Cup but no major individual awards on his résumé?
Does losing an entire season mean that some of hockey's elder statesmen won't be able to beef up their resumes for inclusion in the Hockey Hall of Fame?
