Every month through December, and weekly starting in January, Hockey Prospectus will provide updated Player Power Rankings for the top 10 skaters and top five goalies in the NHL based on HP's proprietary value metric GVT, a statistic that combines player contributions in all aspects of the game, including defense, goaltending and the shootout.

Quite a bit has changed since last month's rankings, with both the skater and goalie ranks featuring new No. 1s. The data presented here includes a value for offensive GVT, defensive GVT, shootout GVT and overall GVT.

Top 10 skaters

1. Alexander Steen, F, St. Louis Blues
Off GVT: 8.2 Def GVT: 2.2 Shootout GVT: 0.6 Total GVT: 11.1

Steen has more goals (15) and points (23) at even-strength than any other player in the NHL, despite having played fewer games. Plus, the Blues have outscored their opponents 29-15 while he's been on the ice.
