Monday 10: Carey Price doesn't look good
With a week's worth of preseason action in the books I thought it would be a good time to bring back "The Monday 10," where we canvas the NHL for some of the weekend's biggest news and notes. Let's get started out west, shall we?
1. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I don't remember seeing split-squad preseason games between the same franchises in different cities on the same night before this year. For example, the Phoenix Coyotes and San Jose Sharks faced each other in both Phoenix and San Jose on Saturday evening. Other teams have engaged in similar scheduling over the past several days.
I haven't really figured out the benefit yet, although I'm sure somebody thought it was a good idea. I did talk to one longtime team exec who pointed out one downside. "A GM can't be in two places at once," he said. "If a player has a good game in one place, the manager [as well as the coach] might have to hear about it secondhand. I don't know if that's such a good thing."
As someone who always feels he sees a lot more of the game when he watches in person (as opposed to on video), I don't know if that's such a good thing, either.
