When the league releases its schedule in mid-July, there are certain dates that we (media and fans) circle on the calendar. This season, Tuesday is one of those dates. The reason is simple: Ryan Smyth is returning to Edmonton for the first time since being traded by the Oilers (to the Islanders) at the trade deadline in February. Smyth returns as a member of the Northwest Division-rival Colorado Avalanche, who signed him as a free agent on July 1. And, I might add, the Avs were willing to pay more money than it would have taken for the Oilers to keep their homegrown hero in Edmonton last winter.
