Coyotes ready to strike

The Phoenix Coyotes' GM search is coming down to the final hours. Several sources indicate that New York Rangers VP of Player Personnel/Assistant GM Don Maloney has emerged as the Coyotes' top choice. According to those sources, the two sides have spent the past 24 hours trying to hammer out a deal that would work for both sides.

Maloney apparently (and wisely) wants at least a five-year commitment to make the move to the desert. Phoenix ownership must balance any deal they make with Maloney against the four years (and approximately $4.5M) that they still owe former GM Mike Barnett.

If the Coyotes can't cage Maloney, they'll re-focus their attention on their other two GM finalists -- Chicago Wolves GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and Boston Bruins scout John Weisbrod.
