As of this post at 9 p.m. on July 1, this summer's NHL free-agent stars Ryan Suter and Zach Parise are waiting to make their decision, but thankfully there was enough activity during a steady flow of action on Sunday to make some early assessments of the 2012 free agent fallout. But for now, here are some key Day 1 evaluations:
Heading in the right direction
Carolina Hurricanes -- They kicked Sunday off with the huge news that center Jordan Staal signed a 10-year deal worth $60 million -- stunningly similar to the deal Staal turned down from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Carolina also aggressively pursued Parise and Suter and GM Jim Rutherford said the Staal trade has given the franchise credibility in talks with potential free agents.
