If Favre's on the team he has to be the starter

No matter what the Packers say publicly, there is no way there could be a legitimate quarterback competition in Green Bay, writes Keith Kidd.

Let's get this out of the way first: There is no way the Green Bay Packers can stage an open quarterback competition, because the only way Brett Favre will not be the Packers' starter on opening day if he is not on Green Bay's roster.

Favre is simply a better quarterback than Aaron Rodgers. Favre has talent and experience on his side, and everyone in the locker room knows that he gives the Packers the best chance to win games and make a run at the Super Bowl. If coach Mike McCarthy were to stand up in front of his team and announce that Rodgers was going to start in Week 1, he would risk losing the support of his players, especially the veterans who know just how hard it is to win on a regular basis in the NFL.

If we were having this conversation following Favre's first year in McCarthy's system -- in which he threw 18 interceptions and the team won just 8 games -- then the competition might be legitimate. However, coming off a season in which Favre posted 28 touchdowns against 15 interceptions and threw for more than 4,000 yards, there really should be no debate about who the starter will be.
