Davis could benefit from depth

Quarterbacks
Houston made David Carr its first draft pick in franchise history when it selected him in 2002, and he hasn't disappointed thus far. While he still makes some poor decisions and needs to do a better job of taking what the defense gives him, he puts great zip on his passes, has the quick release to beat pressure and is a leader. He has shown steady progress over the course of the last three seasons and the team's record has improved each of the past two seasons.

However, the Texans don't want to just be competitive anymore and Carr needs to prove that he can be the quarterback to help them reach the next level, so it's important he continues to progress. It's also important that Carr, who missed four games with injuries during the 20003 season, stays healthy because there isn't great depth behind him.

Tony Banks and Dave Ragone are expected to battle for the backup role. Banks has excellent experience and did an adequate job of filling in for Carr during the 2003 season. The problem is he finished last year with just two pass attempts and, at 32, is clearly on the downside of his career. Ragone has more potential, but struggled in two starts during the 2003 season, and didn't attempt a pass last year.
