The plan is for aging and limited Trent Dilfer to give Cleveland stability in 2005 and help bridge the gap to what the Browns hope will be a contending team in the near future. Time will tell if the plan works. Dilfer has had little game action in recent seasons, but has a great understanding of the game and is considered a consummate leader.

If asked to play the role of caretaker, as he was during his Super Bowl days in Baltimore, he likely still can be effective. But if forced to carry the offense or execute a wide-open passing attack, Cleveland probably will be in trouble. The Browns hope third-round draft pick Charlie Frye will quickly develop and challenge for the starting job in '06. Frye has good size, solid arm strength and a quick release, but is considered something of a project. His learning curve needs to be a short one.
