Betting Kansas City-San Diego
Even though Chiefs are struggling, value is on Kansas City
Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel provided my favorite quote thus far of the 2012 NFL season. When asked why Jamaal Charles carried the ball only five times last week against the Oakland Raiders, Crennel said, "Now, that I'm not exactly sure, either."
Wait, what? Is Crennel aware that he's the head coach? How can he say he's not sure of the reason his star runner had only five carries? I understand that offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who was eviscerated in this Michael Silver story last year, calls the plays, but Crennel needs to know what is going on with his team.
Thursday night's matchup between the Chiefs and San Diego Chargers features two coaches who are fighting for their jobs. It's hard to imagine Crennel or Norv Turner being back next year barring drastic turnarounds.
Still, the Chargers enter this game as a team that could eke out a playoff berth, while the Chiefs are squarely in the hunt for the No. 1 pick in next year's draft. The Chargers have lost three straight games, and their three victories have come against the Raiders (whose long-snapper continually hiked the ball into the ground on punts), the Tennessee Titans and the Chiefs. The fact that they're a 7.5-point favorite is truly a testament to two things: Home teams get incredible support for Thursday night games, and the Chiefs are a sorry team.
According to ESPN Insider's PickCenter, the public supports the Chiefs at a 51.6 percent rate as of Thursday morning. In a presidential pool, that number would have some significance. Here, it means it's truly a toss-up in the public's eyes.
Let's get some line analysis from Jay Kornegay and a pick on the game from Sal Selvaggio of Madduxsports.com.
