After five years of building -- combined with four years of suffering in the win-loss column -- it's payoff time for the Lions.

At least that's the team's thinking as it goes into the 2005 season with high hopes of contending in the NFC North and making a bid for its first playoff berth since 1999. Team president Matt Millen's stated goal when he arrived as the Lions' president in January 2001 was to get younger, faster and better. There is no doubt that the team the Lions will field in the season opener against the Packers in Week 1 is younger and faster. The prevailing sentiment at team headquarters in Allen Park is that it is also better.
