ATLANTA -- His is a name from the past, and he is certainly a player with a past in this city. But quarterback Jeff George, who hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2001, would love to be a part of the Atlanta Falcons' present.

George, 39, earlier this week contacted Falcons general manager Rich McKay, ESPN.com has learned, to inquire about the backup vacancy created by the trade that sent Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans for a package of draft choices. And while it remains a long shot to even suggest that the Falcons actually might consider George, who hasn't been on an NFL roster in three years, McKay apparently didn't dismiss it out of hand.

In fact, George dispatched some videotape via overnight delivery and Atlanta officials figure to at least take a look at it.
