Day 2: Winners and questions
Rams added talent, and the Colts are going all out to help Andrew Luck
NEW YORK -- On Thursday, I loved what New England did with its two first-round picks. On Friday, I see one of the Patriots' two picks as a big question. Fair and balanced! After another day here at Radio City, here are some of my favorite developments and some where I thought the picks seemed a little off.
As was the case Thursday, my sense is teams feel pretty nimble on the draft board and are able to get in place, making it easier to simply target needs. But I have players ranked, so I'm conscious of the value associated with a pick. That's where most questions come into play. As always, read on and let me know where I'm wrong.
Three I liked
Baltimore Ravens
The picks: OLB Courtney Upshaw at No. 35, G Kelechi Osemele at No. 60, RB Bernard Pierce at No. 84
Summary: The Ravens moved out of the first round but still managed to get a first-round player at No. 35 overall. Upshaw will seal the edge as a 3-4 outside linebacker in this system, and can immediately step in and fill the role vacated by Jarret Johnson, himself a former member of the Crimson Tide. Osemele isn't a remarkable value by any means, but he can move inside to guard after playing tackle in college, and guard is a big need. The Ravens also could use help at running back to take some heat off Ray Rice. They get pieces like they didn't skip the first round. Solid day.
