It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why RB Marion Barber lasted until the fourth round of the 2005 draft. Though he put up great numbers at Minnesota, Barber shared carries with 2006 first-round pick Laurence Maroney and many saw Barber as a one-dimensional power back with limited explosiveness.

These concerns were warranted on some level. Barber, who doesn't break many long runs, has started just three games over the past three years and it's no secret that Dallas is looking for a replacement for former starter Julius Jones, who signed with Seattle. However, Barber has developed into one of the top backups in the league and a big reason for his success is that the Cowboys make the most of his strengths.

Dallas' ability to keep Barber fresh and its willingness to use him in short-yardage situations has allowed him to showcase his above-average vision and punishing running style. The fact that he has rushed for 24 touchdowns over the past two seasons, proof that the approach has worked. It's also worth pointing out that Barber has steadily improved as a receiver and the Cowboys have repaid him for his hard work by getting more involved in the passing game. His receiving numbers have climbed steadily over the past three seasons.
