Draft Analysis

WHAT HE BRINGS

Mason has an strong combination of quickness and lateral agility. He also is an instinctive runner who maximizes his yards and does a nice job of getting vertical. He brings added versatility as a pass-catcher but must continue to develop in pass protection.

HOW HE FITS

The Rams continue to surround QB Sam Bradford with weapons. After finding a steal in Zac Stacy in the fifth round last year, general manager Les Snead adds depth at running back with Mason.

Height-Weight-Speed2Shorter than average but height is not a concern. Lacks ideal bulk but adequate for shorter frame. Good timed speed (1.55 10-split and 4.50 40-dash both near top of RBs at Combine). Also recorded 38 " VJ and 10'6" BJ. Has short arms (30") and smaller hands (9").
Durability2Heavy workload took a tool on body and dealt with nagging injuries throughout this past fall including a sprained left ankle. However has suffered no other significant injuries that we are currently aware of.
Intangibles3Good overall work ethic. Highly competitive nature. Will be 21 years old as a rookie. Scouts have raised some minor concerns about maturity. However, no significant off-the-field red flags that we are currently aware of. Father Vincent Mason was a member of the hip-hop group "De La Soul."

Running Back Specific Traits

Competitiveness3Highly competitive runner. Good leg churn and strong finish. Flashes innate instincts in the red zone and is determined runner near the goal line. Ball security has been below average and is a concern. Holds a career 1.6% fumble rate but improved in 2013, when he four times on 344 total touches (1.2%).
Vision/Patience2Quality instincts as a runner. Strong peripheral vision and has a nice feel for the cut back. Good patience setting up and utilizing blocks with minimal wasted motion in the backfield. Too much East/West as a second level runner at times instead of making one cut and getting vertical.
Agility/Acceleration2Quick feet with very good lateral agility. Flashes the ability to string together multiple cuts weaving through traffic. Maneuvers pads well to get skinny and squeeze through creases. Can stop/start on a dime. Above-average acceleration out of cuts and flashes a quick short-area burst to and through the hole. Does not show a sixth gear to out run pursuit and hit the home run.
Power/Balance3Runs with a wide base quality pad level and proper forward lean. Adequate balance. Picks up more yards after contact than a most backs his size, but still an undersized back with below average strength. Runs with knees low to the ground allowing him to get tripped up too easily at times.
Passing Game3Marginal production in the passing game but displays adequate ability in this area. Good ball skills and plucks away from frame. Gets upfield with little wasted motion. Not a burner but can make first defender miss and weave in and out of traffic. Willing to step up in pass pro. Lacks prototypical strength and anchor though. Is overmatched more often than not. Must learn to develop an effective cut block to his arsenal.
