Chargers went outside the box for Gates

When NFL teams are searching for players to upgrade their roster, they sometimes are willing to do two things.
First, they may take a chance on a guy who might have only one or two redeeming characteristics. Second, they might take their search off the beaten path, where most other scouts would not normally travel.
Both were the case when the San Diego Chargers found this year's version of "Who's that guy?" in tight end Antonio Gates.
