Cable's position seemingly improving

Al Davis hasn't made a move to fire coach Tom Cable yet because he's undecided and really doesn't have a strong candidate to possibly replace Cable. Davis has checked around about different alternatives and will probably still continue to make checks. Davis is trying to decide if major changes will help or hurt the franchise. In the meantime, Cable has to sweat out his future, but he's got to be feeling a little more confident that he might stay. During the conversations Davis has had with Cable, the coach might have convinced the Raiders' owner that it shouldn't be a lock that JaMarcus Russell will be the starting quarterback in 2010. Davis, according to a source, now understands Russell needs to work harder and perform better to be given the chance to start next season.
