Davis taking hands-on approach

Al Davis had direct involvement in deals to re-sign punter Shane Lechler and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. That's why it got done. Davis talked to agent Tom Condon and made sure the organization did everything to finish those deals -- regardless of the price. Lechler took punting salaries to $4 million a year. Asomugha took cornerback salaries to $15 million-plus. Davis didn't care about the cap consequences. He wanted to keep the players.
