Brooks' long-term future in doubt

Aaron Brooks is being benched by Saints coach Jim Haslett this week, not for his critical comments about commissioner Paul Tagliabue or the Saints' plight. The decision was made because the team is 3-10 and needs a spark. Todd Bouman will get the start against the Panthers on Sunday. Brooks will be the backup. Brooks has completed 240 of 431 passes for 2,882 yards and 13 touchdowns. His quarterback rating has dropped to 70. He's had 17 interceptions and has been sacked 33 times. Although the move was done for the moment, the benching of Brooks does raise questions about his future. He has two years remaining on his contract and his numbers are big. He has an $8.48 cap number next year and a $9.48 million cap number in 2007. Bouman has thrown only 13 passes this year, completing five.
