Q: Is there any update on the contract talks between Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints?

-- Matt (La.)

A: Not much of one, Matt. Unless something changes -- and it always could during the season -- it doesn't sound like Brees' deal will get done in 2011. The Saints know they have their franchise tag, which they would absolutely slap on Brees, and he would have the right to not sign it and skip training camp. Chances are it never gets to that -- both sides want to get this deal done. But both sides are entrenched in in their stances now and there's a noticeable gap in their numbers.

Q: I read your report that Joe Philbin could be in line for a head coach gig next offseason. Which other NFL assistants have been mentioned as hot names in the head-coaching market for 2012?

-- Caleb (N.C.)
