Michala Johnson set for surgery

Michala Johnson, the 6-foot-3 Connecticut signee, will have surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee the second week in February, according to Jason Nichols, her Montini Catholic High School coach.

Nichols told ESPN HoopGurlz the ACL tear has been confirmed and that Johnson, the No. 46 prospect in the senior class, also has some minor damage to the meniscus in the same knee as well.

"While we may have lost her at Montini she will be as good as new come the fall at UConn," Nichols said. "Her left knee is as strong as ever."

Johnson suffered a torn ACL in her left knee in the fall of 2008 and missed most of her junior season at Montini. She suffered the current injury to her right knee during the Jan. 12, game against Guerin High School.

It's official: Bria Hartley to UConn

Bria Hartley, ranked No. 14 in 2010 by ESPN HoopGurlz, made her commitment to Connecticut official by informing Husky coaches on Monday evening, according to her club coach, Apache Paschall of Exodus NYC.

The 5-foot-7 point guard from North Babylon, N.Y., just returned from an official visit to Storrs, Conn., for the Super Show with four previously committed recruits, plus 2011 recruit Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, who committed to Connecticut this weekend.

Hartley joins four other ranked prospects in coach Geno Auriemma's 2010 recruiting class -- No. 10 Samarie Walker, No. 39 Stefanie Dolson, No. 46 Michala Johnson, and No. 95 Lauren Engeln.

Kentucky probably was the biggest rival for Hartley's commitment, though Georgetown and Tennessee also were among her finalists. Close friend and training partner Jennifer O'Neill of the Bronx, N.Y., committed to Kentucky during an official visit to Lexington this weekend.

Big commitment to Connecticut is confirmed

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, the No. 2 prospect in the ESPN HoopGurlz Super Sixty, has committed to Connecticut, her stepfather, Khairi Ali, confirmed on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, players who accompanied Mosqueda-Lewis on a trip to Connecticut told ESPN HoopGurlz of the Anaheim, Calif., guard's pledge.

Ali said the family was not interested in offering any further comments or interviews.

Mosqueda-Lewis was at Connecticut for the Super Show on Friday with 2010 commits Stefanie Dolson, Lauren Engeln, Michala Johnson and Samarie Walker, as well as 2010 recruits Bria Hartley and Chiney Ogwumike. She is known to have favored the Huskies, particularly after making an unofficial visit to UConn after she played with Mater Dei High School in Springfield, Mass., last winter.

Led by No. 10 Walker, all four 2010 Connecticut recruits are ranked by ESPN HoopGurlz. Hartley, No. 14, is considered a done deal by many for coach Geno Auriemma.

No. 10 Dolson picks UConn

The University of Connecticut struck gold in October by securing a verbal commitment from the No. 1 player in the ESPN HoopGurlz Super Sixty for the 2010 class. The Huskies have hit the prospect lottery yet again in the junior class with the verbal commitment of 6-foot-5 post Stefanie Dolson, according to her N.Y. Elite club program director Marc Riley.

Dolson is ranked No. 10 in the Super Sixty and her verbal commitment gives Geno Auriemma?s program a firm grasp on the top recruiting class for next year.

"I didn't know she was going to make that decision this soon," Riley said.

But Dolson was ready to make the decision this early. She sat down with Riley and went over her options. Dolson made unofficial visits with her Silver Bullets' teammates throughout the past few travel seasons and this year took in games at Connecticut, Maryland, Penn State and Rutgers while also attending Midnight Madness.
