Houston Bates doesn't sign but will be a Tiger

Three-star defensive end Houston Bates (Covington, La./St. Paul's School) did not sign with LSU Wednesday but is expected to join the team as a walk-on in the fall and then will likely go on scholarship for the second semester, according to The Advocate.

"He could have done a classic grayshirt," said John Heaton, his stepfather, "but besides wanting to practice with the team, Houston wants to go into premed. To not start his classes until January would really set him back academically."

Defensive lineman Dexter Blackmon (Selma, Ala.), an LSU verbal commitment leading up to Wednesday, also did not sign. The Advocate reports that Blackmon has academic work to do.

Lache Seastrunk, RB

Temple, TX

Temple High School

Scouts Grade: 83
ESPN150 Rank: 40
Position Rank: 6

Four-star running back Lache Seastrunk announces for Oregon

Highly-touted ball-carrier Lache Seastrunk (Temple, Texas) has committed to sign as part of Oregon's Class of 2010, ESPN affiliate Web site DuckTerritory.com reports.

"I'm plenty excited to be a Duck. I'm so glad that they took the time to give me an opportunity to play for them. I can't wait to start classes and get up there and win a National Championship," he said.

He also seriously considered Auburn, LSU, USC and Memphis. Seastrunk was believed to be a USC-lean before Pete Carroll's departure for Seattle. The Conference USA Tigers recently joined the mix after hiring former LSU assistant coach Larry Porter.

ESPN's Billy Tucker said of the news, "Oregon's been in position to land a handful of marquee names over the last few years but for the most part have come up short. That's what makes the pickup of Seastrunk so significant from a recruiting standpoint."

"While we didn't buy into the overall hype surrounding this ESPNU 150 prospect due to concerns about his ability to be an every-down back, we do feel that this is an excellent fit for his skill-set. In Chip Kelly's potent spread offense backs who can create mismatches in space, make the first the defender miss through the whole, and get to the perimeter are most productive. Seastrunk might be the best in that element when looking at all the running backs in this class."

"His hands and overall receiving skills still need a bit of polish but he has the speed and elusiveness to create a big play every time he touches the ball. He likely won't be called up to carry the load but could compliment a stable of undersized playmakers in the backfield early in his career."

The nation's No. 6-rated running back rushed for 1,174 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior. He is Temple's career leader in rushing yards (4,127) and touchdowns (52).
