A three-star prospect at running back, Cassius McDowell of Deerfield Beach, Fla., has picked Toledo for the Class of 2010.

He also holds offers from West Virginia, Florida Atlantic and Connecticut.

The 5-foot-8, 170-pound McDowell registered an electronically timed 4.5 40-yard dash and 30-inch vertical at the Miami Nike combine.

Rutgers has added a Class of 2010 pledge from Malcolm Cater, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker from Riverhead, N.Y., who decommitted from Syracuse.

Carter was also offered by Connecticut.

Hurricanes continue to add out-of-state recruits in Gaines

James Gaines, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound linebacker from Canisius (Buffalo, N.Y.), has committed to Miami-Florida for the Class of 2010.

Gaines, who had decommitted from Buffalo following the coaching change, has also been offered by Syracuse and Connecticut.

He made an official visit to campus this weekend. Fellow Miami pledge Kelvin Cain (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan), told ESPN affiliate Web site InsideTheU.com, "We were trying to convince him and he ended up committing so I guess we did a good job with that."

Gaines was all over the field as a senior registering 154 tackles, three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. On offense, he caught 15 passes for 270 yards (18 average) and two touchdowns.

Joseph Byrd of Baker (Cape Coral, Fla.) has given a Class of 2010 commitment to Arkansas.

Recruited as a cornerback, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Byrd was also offered by Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Florida International, Louisville, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Minnesota and Purdue.

He posted a 4.41 40-yard dash, 4.63 20-yard shuttle, 7.66 three-cone drill and 28.5-inch vertical at the Orlando Under Armour Combine following his junior season.

Connecticut has snared a Class of 2010 pledge from Josh Alexander, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound defensive end/linebacker from Westlake (Waldorf, Md.).

Among his other offers were Maryland, North Carolina State, Temple and New Mexico.

"I'm just happy to be in this situation," he told the Harford Courant. "I feel very blessed. I just love Coach Edsall and how faithful he is to his players. When they come in they change in a lot of ways. He instills discipline."

"Coach Edsall man, I just love him. He was the only coach I felt kept it 100 (honest). I didn't feel like the same with the other coaches."

6-foot-7, 295-pound Greg McKee of King (Chicago, Ill.) has picked Connecticut of the Big East for the Class of 2010.

He chose the Huskies over Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois.

UConn now has 19 commitments.

McKeesport defensive back Ty-Meer Brown set for Connecticut

The Huskies have gained a commitment from Ty-Meer Brown of McKeesport, Pa., for the Class of 2010.

Projected as a safety, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Brown was also offered by Bowling Green, Akron, Kent State, Pittsburgh and Toledo.

"I went up there and my mom basically committed for me on the way back," Brown told the Daily News. "I liked it up there. The coaching staff was cool and the facilities were real nice."

He is the 20th incoming player for the Huskies.

Rutgers offers Jersey junior Miles Shuler

Class of 2011 prospect Miles Shuler (Long Branch, N.J.) has received a scholarship offer from Rutgers, ESPN's JC Shurburtt reports.

The Scarlet Knights join Duke and Northwestern in offering the speedy athlete.

Other programs including UConn and Stanford are also showing interest.

Illini land Jacksonville receiver Ryan Lankford for 2010

Ryan Lankford, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound wideout from Paxon School (Jacksonville, Fla., has accepted an offer from Illinois.

Among his other Class of 2010 offers were Louisville, Central Florida, Connecticut, Tulane, Central Michigan and Florida Atlantic.

Lankford posted an electronically-timed 4.48 40-yard dash, 4.42 20-yard shuttle and 33-inch vertical at the Miami Nike Combine.

His father, Paul, was a long-time defensive back for the NFL Miami Dolphins.
