Pac 10 Cougars gain JUCO wide receiver for Class of 2010

Washington State has added a JUCO receiver to its Class of 2010 in Isiah Barton of Fresno CC, Calif.

Barton (6-foot-1, 190-pounds) caught 48 passes for 715 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2009 season.

Originally from Westchester (Los Angeles, Calif.), he was a walk-on at Fresno State before transferring to Fresno CC.

Fresno State lands three-state kicker Matt Darr, who drops Trojans

Top punter Matt Darr of Frontier (Bakersfield, Calif.), has pledged to the Bulldogs for the Class of 2010 after decommitting from Southern California.

Darr also had offers from Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Northwestern, Purdue, Baylor and UTEP, among others.

Riggins originally was committed to the Wolf Pack.

Fresno State has collected a Class of 2010 pledge from Ofa Fifita, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound outside linebacker from Arroyo Valley (San Bernardino, Calif.).

He was also offered by Hawaii, Nevada, San Jose State, Colorado State and UNLV.

California picks up Long Beach Poly product Kaelin Clay

Senior receiver Kaelin Clay (Long Beach, Calif./Poly) has committed to the in-state Cal Bears, ESPN's Greg Biggins reports.

Clay made an official visit to Hawaii last weekend and was scheduled to visit Fresno State. Utah State also extended a scholarship offer.

"I had a great time on the visit and when they decided to offer me a scholarship, I basically committed almost on the spot. I told myself before the visit that if Cal offered and I was comfortable there, I would go ahead and jump on it and that's what happened. I talked with Coach (Jeff) Tedford and he's a real good guy. They have some big plans for me and I'm excited to be a Bear," he said.

Clay caught 24 passes for 459 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 548 yards and six more scores this fall.

Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) quarterback Greg Watson has committed to Fresno State head coach Pat Hill for the Class of 2010.

Recruited as a defensive back, he also received a scholarship offer from the Oregon Ducks.

Derron Smith picks the WAC Bulldogs

From Banning HS (Banning, Calif.), safety Derron Smith has accepted an offer from Fresno State for the Class of 2010.

The 6-foot-0, 195-pound prospect was also recruited by Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Diego State and San Jose State.

"All my visits were great but this one really stood out," Smith told ESPN's Greg Biggins. "I felt so comfortable with the players and coaches there and I knew it was the best place for me. I actually committed Saturday night. I didn't need to wait that long to know it was the best spot for me and where I would fit in the best."

As a junior, he threw for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns while also rushing for 1,094 yards and eight more scores.

On defense, Smith registered 87 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one interception. He also handled kicking and punting duties.

280-pound offensive lineman Tyeler Davison of Desert Mountain (Scottsdale, Ariz.) has chosen the Bulldogs for the Class of 2010.

He was also sought by Air Force and UNLV.

Wide receiver Josh Harper drops Cal in favor of Fresno State

Three-star prospect Josh Harper (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) has decommitted from Cal and is now set to play for Fresno State, ESPN's Greg Biggins reports.

"Cal is a great school and I know I would have been happy there," Harper said. "It was nothing against Cal, I just felt like Fresno State was a better fit and I felt like I would have a better opportunity to play right away there as well."

He also seriously considered Oregon State. Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA, Washington, Washington State, Stanford and UNLV were among his other offers.

Former Fresno State QB Matt Faulkner to San Jose State

Mt. San Antonio CC, Calif. quarterback Matt Faulkner has made a Class of 2010 decision to play for San Jose State.

He chose the Spartans over Western Kentucky and Temple.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Faulkner, who played as a prep at Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas), originally signed with Fresno State. He redshirted in 2007 and spent 2008 as the scout team quarterback before transferring to junior college.

Faulkner will a redshirt junior in the fall for the Spartans.

During the 2009 season for Mt. San Antonio, Faulkner was the SCFA Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for 3,307 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 61.1 percent of his passes. Faulkner quarterbacked the Mounties to a 7-6 win over College of San Mateo to win the California Community College Athletic Association state championship.
