RedHawks score another Gateway senior in Orne Bey

Orne Bey, who plays running back/defensive back for Gateway (Monroeville, Pa.), has made a commitment to Miami-Ohio for the Class of 2010.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Bey was recruited by the RedHawks as a slot receiver/running back. He also drew interest from Akron, Bowling Green Toledo and Syracuse.

Bey told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Miami-Ohio coach Michael Haywood presented opportunities he could not ignore. He also may get a chance to return kicks.

Bey has rushed for 769 yards and nine touchdowns for undefeated and top-ranked Gateway (12-0), which plays Woodland Hills on Friday night (Nov. 27) for the Class AAAA championship.

"He (Bey) was just a special teams guy last year and he was just a guy waiting his turn," Gateway coach Terry Smith said to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "The last few years, all of my guys in the secondary have been scholarship guys. So he was waiting his turn. He took advantage of his senior opportunities."
