Melvin Davis (Harbor City, Calif./Narbonne), one of Washington's highest-rated verbal commitments heading into Wednesday, did not sign.

According to the Seattle Times, the four-star athlete is likely headed to junior college to straighten out his academic situation before signing with an FBS school.

In a shocker, Josh Shirley picks the UCLA Bruins

Four-star outside linebacker Josh Shirley (Fontana, Calif./Kaiser) announced that he'll commit to UCLA, ESPN's Greg Biggins reports.

Shirley, who never visited the Bruins, named USC, Washington, Miami-FL and Arizona as his finalists going into Wednesday.

"This is where my heart always was," Shirley said. "This decision really weighed on me and I didn't get much sleep last night. I talked about it with my family and I just felt like UCLA was the best place for me."

Among the four-star's many other offers were Arizona State, Nebraska, UCLA, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State and Utah.

The Ducks snare Cali kicker away from Washington

Alejandro Maldonado, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound kicking prospect from Colton, Calif., has selected Oregon for the Class of 2010.

He decommitted from an earlier pledge to the Huskies.

Maldonado told the Seattle Times, "I didn't want to make Washington mad. But I was curious, so I went to check the place out. I took a visit at the last minute and it was pretty neat when I was up there.''

BYU Cougars rescind offer to Hawaiian prep star Kona Schwenke

Three-star defensive lineman Kona Schwenke of Kahuku, Hawaii, who is visiting Notre Dame this weekend, has had his Class of 2010 scholarship offer withdrawn by the Cougars.

Schwenke, who committed to BYU last summer, is also expected to trip to Washington.

Keanon Lowe swaps Washington for the in-state Ducks

High three-star athlete Keanon Lowe (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) decommitted from Washington in favor of Oregon following an official visit to campus, ESPN's Greg Biggins reports.

"This is just the best situation for me," Lowe said. "You have to understand, ever since I was five, I wanted to play for the Ducks. It's always been my dream to play there and I always had in the back of my mind to play for the home-state school."

"Seven months ago when I first committed, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to Oregon," he added. "I went to their Junior Day but didn't get the same vibe I had at Washington. This visit really helped me out a lot because I got to hang out with the players and coaches a lot more."

Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona State, Colorado, BYU and Boise State also offered.

He rushed for 903 yards (8.2 average) and 14 touchdowns while also catching 41 passes for 594 yards (14.5 average) and seven more scores as a senior.

Athlete Kyle Middlebrooks chooses Sun Devils over rival Arizona

Arizona State has added Kyle Middlebrooks, a running back/slot receiver from Fountain Valley, Calif., to its recruiting Class of 2010.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound prospect chose ASU over Arizona. He was also sought by Washington, Washington State, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV and Utah.

Middlebrooks rushed for over 1900 yards and had 29 touchdowns as a senior.
