Longhorns win battle for No. 1 defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat

Five-star prospect Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, Texas/West) committed to Texas Friday during a 10 A.M. CST press conference at Plano West High School. He selected the Longhorns over Oklahoma and Houston. Jeffcoat also considered Arizona State, USC and Florida.

He said, "I want to thank Houston. They were great throughout the process. And I want to thank Oklahoma. They taught me a lot. But I am going to Texas."

ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "No. 1-rated defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat has been very open with the programs that were in the running for his services, but throughout the process information and leaders for his commitment have been tightlipped."

"Despite the overall very quiet nature of his recruitment it had seemed that the Longhorns throughout the whole process were the team to beat. Under Pete Carroll the Trojans seemed to be a formidable opponent and down the stretch Oklahoma looked to make a strong push, but in the end Texas did what they do best and that was bring elite in-state talent to Austin. Texas is usually pretty quiet this time of year as they assemble their classes quickly and early, but they showed in this instance that can battle as long as it takes when need be for in-state talent."

"What they get in Jeffcoat, the No. 2 overall player in the ESPNU 150, is a defensive end with fine athleticism and an excellent feel for the position. He has good height and a great frame to develop and if he should focus solely on football he should be able to bulk up fairly quickly."

"The son of a former NFL defensive lineman and current college D-Line coach it is not shocking to see what a good technician he is. He is tough versus the run and the pass as he plays with good leverage and is goods with his hands. While a good overall football player, what really makes him shine is his ability as a pass rusher. He is a very savvy pass rusher for a high school prospect as he displays the ability to use his weapons and execute moves and can defeat blockers by setting them up and having a plan."

"Texas has an excellent class and just days away from national signing day added a huge piece. Jeffcoat who also has upside is a kid who could help quickly especially as a pass rusher and develop into an excellent defensive player in Will Muschamp's system."

Jordan Hicks, OLB

Scouts Grade: 87
ESPN150 Rank: 4
Position Rank: 1

Under Armour All-American linebacker Jordan Hicks to Texas

Five-star Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) announced for the Longhorns Friday at a 12:30 EST press conference held at Lakota West High School. He picked Texas over Ohio State and Florida. Alabama and USC were previously included with Hicks' top schools.

"They were all good programs but Texas had that family feel that made me feel like I'm already a part of," Hicks said. "It was just in my heart. That's where I felt most comfortable."

ESPN's Billy Tucker added, "As Jim Tressel is licking his wounds in Columbus, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp must be licking his chops in the Austin with the pair of defensive difference-makers he just landed. Like Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, Texas/West), we expect Hicks, the top overall linebacker in this class, to compete for early playing time and make a significant contribution during his career as a Longhorn."

"Texas is a getting the complete package at the outside linebacker position and a real scheme versatile defender who could play all three linebacker spots on the second level of Muschamp's defense. While stout versus the run, physical at the point of attack and fast pursuing sideline-to-sideline; expect Hick's explosiveness off the edge to be the attribute that gets him on the field earliest. He has a quick first step and excellent explosiveness attacking off the perimeter in heavy pressure situations."

"Overall, there are few linebackers that come out of high school with this guy's blend of size and speed as well as fierce competitiveness. This is simply a monumental out-of-state land for the Longhorns as they now make an argument for top class consideration in 2010."

Hicks recorded 69 solo tackles, 25 assists, 13 tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions as a senior. He won the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top high school linebacker.

ESPNU 150 Watch List tight end Chris Barnett names five favorites

6-foot-5, 235-pound junior Chris Barnett (Euless, Texas/Trinity) listed his leaders for ESPN affiliate Web site InsideTheU.com.

"I keep it really open but as far as the top five schools I'm considering, it can change at any moment," Barnett said. "It's based on who is recruiting me the hardest so it would probably be Tennessee, TCU, Miami, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State."

He also revealed a potential time-frame for his decision, "I was considering waiting longer, but I would like to go into the summer knowing where I'm going to school. I could see myself committing in the next few months, maybe even next month. I know there's a lot of junior days coming up so if I go to one and it goes well, it might be a commitment."

The in-state Texas Longhorns are one school that is recruiting Barnett but does not extend early scholarship offers to juniors.
