Longhorns win battle for No. 1 defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat

Five-star prospect Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, Texas/West) committed to Texas Friday during a 10 A.M. CST press conference at Plano West High School. He selected the Longhorns over Oklahoma and Houston. Jeffcoat also considered Arizona State, USC and Florida.

He said, "I want to thank Houston. They were great throughout the process. And I want to thank Oklahoma. They taught me a lot. But I am going to Texas."

ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "No. 1-rated defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat has been very open with the programs that were in the running for his services, but throughout the process information and leaders for his commitment have been tightlipped."

"Despite the overall very quiet nature of his recruitment it had seemed that the Longhorns throughout the whole process were the team to beat. Under Pete Carroll the Trojans seemed to be a formidable opponent and down the stretch Oklahoma looked to make a strong push, but in the end Texas did what they do best and that was bring elite in-state talent to Austin. Texas is usually pretty quiet this time of year as they assemble their classes quickly and early, but they showed in this instance that can battle as long as it takes when need be for in-state talent."

"What they get in Jeffcoat, the No. 2 overall player in the ESPNU 150, is a defensive end with fine athleticism and an excellent feel for the position. He has good height and a great frame to develop and if he should focus solely on football he should be able to bulk up fairly quickly."

"The son of a former NFL defensive lineman and current college D-Line coach it is not shocking to see what a good technician he is. He is tough versus the run and the pass as he plays with good leverage and is goods with his hands. While a good overall football player, what really makes him shine is his ability as a pass rusher. He is a very savvy pass rusher for a high school prospect as he displays the ability to use his weapons and execute moves and can defeat blockers by setting them up and having a plan."

"Texas has an excellent class and just days away from national signing day added a huge piece. Jeffcoat who also has upside is a kid who could help quickly especially as a pass rusher and develop into an excellent defensive player in Will Muschamp's system."
