The 6-foot-4, 295-pound offensive lineman decommitted from San Diego State. He was also offered by UTEP and Idaho.

Derron Smith picks the WAC Bulldogs

From Banning HS (Banning, Calif.), safety Derron Smith has accepted an offer from Fresno State for the Class of 2010.

The 6-foot-0, 195-pound prospect was also recruited by Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Diego State and San Jose State.

"All my visits were great but this one really stood out," Smith told ESPN's Greg Biggins. "I felt so comfortable with the players and coaches there and I knew it was the best place for me. I actually committed Saturday night. I didn't need to wait that long to know it was the best spot for me and where I would fit in the best."

As a junior, he threw for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns while also rushing for 1,094 yards and eight more scores.

On defense, Smith registered 87 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one interception. He also handled kicking and punting duties.

Three-star offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) has made a Class of 2010 decision to play for Southern Methodist.

He was also sought by Iowa State, San Diego State, Nevada, UNLV, Colorado State and New Mexico State.

Long Beach athlete Ezell Ruffin accepts offer from the Aztecs

San Diego State has landed versatile athlete Ezell Ruffin of Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.) for the Class of 2010.

Ruffin, 6-foot-0, 185-pounds, was recruited as a receiver/kick returner. He may also be used in Wildcat direct snap situations.

As a senior, he rushed for 758 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also caught 21 passes for 301 yards and four scores. On returns, he averaged 21.5 yards and 18.1 on punts.

Ruffin also had offers from New Mexico, UNLV and Utah State. He drew late interest from Nebraska, Washington and Arizona State.

North Texas draws pledge from three-star Zachary Orr of DeSoto

Zachary Orr, a 6-foot-0, 230-pound linebacker from DeSoto, Texas, has agreed to sign a Class of 2010 scholarship offer from the Mean Green.

He also considered offers from Louisiana Tech, UTEP and San Diego State.

"North Texas is an up-and-coming program, and my teammate (Vincent Eddie) committed there," Orr told the Denton Record-Chronicle. "It had a real homey feeling. There is a chance I could play early."

Orr was a First Team Class 5A All-State selection as a junior.

Bradford originally selected the Rebels last April but switched to San Diego State after the firing of former coach Mike Sanford.

Whittaker is the fifth Oceanside player from the Pirates' CIF State Bowl Division I championship team to chose the Aztecs, including linebacker Jake Fely, safety Rene Siluano, cornerback King Holder and defensive tackle Kenneth Galea'i.

He also has offers from Washington, Washington State, Texas A&M and New Mexico State.

On offense, Whittaker rushed for 627 yards and five touchdowns, and caught 49 passes for 770 yards and six scores.

The Aztecs have gained a commitment from Adam Muema, who rushed for 1938 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior for Charter Oak (Covina, Calif.).

Colorado, Washington State, Nevada and UTEP also offered the 5-foot-11, 187-pound standout.

"San Diego State just felt like the best fit for me," he told ESPN's Greg Biggins. "I like the offense and how they plan to use me. I like all the coaches and the location is perfect. It's not too far from home but still far enough for me to feel like I'm going away to college."
