Four-star running back Giovanni Bernard set for the Fighting Irish
No. 17-rated ball-carrier Giovanni Bernard (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) has committed to sign with Notre Dame, ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports. He selected the Irish over Nebraska, Tennessee, Oregon State, Florida State, Alabama and Miami-FL.
"I picked them because they have a good situation for me," he said. "Coach (Tony) Alford, the running backs coach was truthful to me, and most of all, the education that they offer and life after football is my biggest thing."
Other programs including Oklahoma, West Virginia, Maryland, Auburn, Rutgers, Boston College, Pittsburgh, UConn and Arkansas also offered the 5-foot-9, 195-pounder, who rushed for 1,371 yards and 16 touchdowns last fall.
ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "Every year under Charlie Weis, with the arguable exception of the 2009 class, the Fighting Irish have landed a running back with good potential. Some have not panned out as expected, some have been solid, and the jury is still out on others. One thing to this point seems clear though and that is the Irish have not been able to find that one carry the load / game changing back."
"Not ones to give up, Notre Dame is bringing another talented back into the mix and this one might be able to be the one. Giovanni Bernard out of the very successful St Thomas Aquinas program in South Florida committed to Notre Dame and is a very good back from a winning program. Bernard has adequate size, but a physical running style in which he almost seems to take pride in trying to punish defenders. He is naturally tough to tackle as a result. He displays good vision and lateral quickness."
"Concerns with Bernard are breakaway speed which could hurt his big play potential and durability as he has been battling through injuries this season. Bernard may not be an explosive back in South Bend, but he could rise to the top heap with a physical and tone setting running style that could compliment Notre Dame's passing attack well."
