ESPNU 150 Watch List QB Everett Golson picks North Carolina

Junior signal-caller Everett Golson (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) committed to sign as part of North Carolina's Class of 2011 on Friday. South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Duke were among his other written scholarship offers.

"It was always my dream to be a North Carolina Tar Heel," Golson told the Sun News. "Right now I feel like I can seize the opportunity to do that."

He has thrown for 9,872 yards and 126 touchdowns entering his senior season. As a junior, Golson completed 63-percent of his attempts for 3,558 yards, 47 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Golson, a point guard on Myrtle Beach's basketball team, was been promised an opportunity to try out for North Carolina's basketball team.

Daxx Garman makes early pledge to the Arizona Wildcats

Class of 2011 quarterback Daxx Garman (Jones, Okla.) has committed to sign with Arizona next February, according to ESPN affiliate Web site WildcatSportsReport.com.

The 6-foot-1 prospect is expected to transfer to Carroll (Southlake, Texas).

North Carolina also extended an early scholarship offer to Garman.

Kentucky Wildcats sign four-star running back Brandon Gainer

Central (Miami, Fla.) running back Brandon Gainer has faxed his letter of intent to new head coach Joker Phillips of Kentucky on Signing Day.

Kentucky running backs coach Mark Higgs is a former Kentucky standout running back and has tutored Gainer for the past few years while at Central High School.

Gainer chose Kentucky over North Carolina, Central Florida and South Florida. He was also offered by Florida State, Louisville, Oregon and Texas Tech.

Alex Smith makes another switch, now on board with Kentucky

Three-star tight end Alex Smith (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) has decommitted from North Carolina and is now set to sign with Kentucky, ESPN affiliate Web site KentuckyInk.com reports.

"My biggest thing is playing early at whatever school I go to," Smith said. "I feel I will at Kentucky. I had a lot of faith in Coach Phillips and Coach Brooks, but with Coach Phillips getting the head-coaching job, and with them graduating three senior tight ends, the big need for them is a tight end. They have always recruited me hard since my sophomore year."

Smith originally committed to Cincinnati under former head coach Brian Kelly. Wisconsin, Michigan, LSU, Miami-FL, N.C. State, Purdue, Indiana, Tennessee, Illinois, Penn State, West Virginia and Ohio State were among his other offers.

6-foot-5, 240-pound Quinton Alton of Hillcrest (Memphis, Tenn.) has committed to sign with North Carolina for the Class of 2010.

Alton was recruited as a defensive end/tight end.

Alabama has landed touted 5-foot-11, 195-pound defensive back, Dequan Menzie of Copiah-Lincoln CC, Miss., for the Class of 2010.

Originally from Carver (Columbus, Ga.), Menzie was also sought by Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and Mississippi State, among many others.

"I'm excited, man. It was everything about Alabama, as soon as I stepped on campus," Menzie told the Mobile Press-Register. "If my mom is happy, I'm happy."

Former Irish pledge Giovanni Bernard picks North Carolina

Four-star running back Giovanni Bernard of St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), who recently decommitted from Notre Dame, has pledged to the Tar Heels.

He also considered Oregon State.

Other programs including Oklahoma, West Virginia, Maryland, Auburn, Rutgers, Boston College, Pittsburgh, UConn and Arkansas also offered the 5-foot-9, 195-pound prospect.

Bernard, who missed most of his senior season with a hamstring injury, finished his career with 2603 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns.

Tar Heels stay hot, add three-star Tim Jackson

Defensive end Tim Jackson (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs) committed to North Carolina during a Friday press conference, the St. Petersburg Times reports.

He selected the Tar Heels over Mississippi State and Wake Forest. Several other programs including Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Florida and Stanford also extended scholarship offers.

"North Carolina's a great place," he said. "When I went on my visit, I felt at home. It came down to atmosphere and where I felt I belonged."
