Evaluation
Hurley is a big, prototypical pocket passer with tremendous size and is at his best in a pro-style scheme, working from under center and protected within the pocket. He has terrific height to see the field and is competent as a short-to-intermediate range passer. He is also a deceptively good athlete with adequate feet. Needs to be on time and in a rhythm to be at his best. This is not a player that is going to create and make plays on his own. He can survey the field and work through his progressions. Is proficient in the three step passing game getting the ball out on time. He is a tough guy, and is not afraid to sit in the pocket and take a hit. Shows adequate zip on underneath throws and when he is set flashes the ability to make middle range throws outside of the numbers with adequate velocity. Shows upside to become a good ball handler and pocket passer freezing defenders with play fakes and creating more time to work through progressions. However, Hurley may struggle eluding the rush at the next level. He is a bit methodical as a drop back passer and flashes difficulty sliding with the pocket, settling and balancing his feet before the throw. Mechanics are a bit raw. Displays a low release and does not consistently square his body to the intended receiver and step into his throws. Arm strength is average and for a player of his size you would expect to see more power. Release point somewhat negates his fantastic height. Overall, Hurley is somewhat of a dying breed in today's game and needs to be in the right scheme to flourish. He has the measurables and is productive, but may also have some limitations as well.
