What it takes to succeed as a college offensive lineman

The following is a breakdown of the six categories (size excluded) we use when evaluating college offensive linemen. Also included in each category are, in my opinion, the top three examples from college football today.

1. PASS PROTECTION (ARMS)
Best three examples:
1. Sam Baker, OT, USC (Sr.)
2. Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State (Jr.)
3. Alex Mack, OC, Cal (Jr.)
Good instincts to anticipate double moves, twists, stunts and blitzes. Quick feet to get set in time. Balance and body control in order to mirror and slide. Lateral movement to shuffle back inside. Long arms to keep separation and force pass-rushers wide. Powerful punch to jar a defender and ruin his momentum. Must be a natural knee bender and show a wide base in order to anchor versus the bull rush.
