COACH AND PROGRAM

When Howard Schnellenberger arrived at the University of Miami in 1979, the program was as good as dead. There was talk that football at Miami might be extinct within a few short years.

Out of those ashes rose the 1983 national championship team, coached by Schnellenberger and led by a quarterback named Jim Kelly. That team paved the way for three more national championships, transforming a program in shambles when Schnellenberger arrived into the dominant program in all of college football.

Then came a similar rebuilding job in Louisville, where he turned a 2-9 team in his first year into a 10-1-1 team by his sixth.

Schnellenberger has been present for a lot of great moments in football history. He played for Paul "Bear" Bryant at the University of Kentucky before becoming his offensive coordinator at Alabama. He was there for the glory days of Crimson Tide football, assisting Bryant to three national championships in the 1960s.

Schnellenberger was also an assistant coach with the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. Then came the Miami Hurricanes' thrilling Orange Bowl victory over Nebraska in 1983.
