Riding the crest of their obliteration of Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, cruising into an off-season with a wealth of frontline players, the Tennessee Volunteers in 2005 could reign over college football with powers plenipotentiary -- if they stay out of the penitentiary.

Even for a program especially suited for the undesirable trappings of the off-season, Tennessee stomached an inordinate rash of willful, if not downright illegal, actions among its athletes.

The blotter actually dates from March 2004, when punter Britton Colquitt was briefly suspended by head coach Phillip Fulmer for underage possession, Colquitt's fourth alcohol-related sin in a span of six months of his red-shirt year.

Shortly thereafter, receiver and ex-quarterback James Banks was suspended indefinitely after a verbal clash with a coed at the university's Thornton Athletics Student Life Center. Brouhahas and Banks were blood brothers over the last year -- he was suspended for three games in July 2004 after being cited for violation of Knoxville's noise ordinance and underage consumption. Then Banks was dismissed from the team for good after violating UT's drug policy a second time (at least) last December and enrolled at Division III Franklin College in Indiana.
