Team preview: Wake Forest
Blue Ribbon Yearbook previews the 2005 college football season, exclusively on Insider.
For three years, nearly every one sung the praises of Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe's ability to turn one of Division I-A's smallest schools into a regular winner.
Last year, there was little to sing about.
The young and inexperienced Deacons did show that Grobe's system was competitive, even in a larger ACC. They managed to take seven games down to the final few minutes.
Trouble was, the only one of those close games that the Deacons managed to win was against Boston College, a nationally televised 17-14 victory at home.
In the other six games, Wake lost two in overtime (N.C. State and Clemson) and four more by a touchdown or less (Virginia Tech, Florida State, North Carolina and Maryland). The only time the Deacons were really overmatched came in a 52-7 loss to new ACC member Miami.
