The lawsuits have finally been settled. The exit fees have been paid. The ill will seems to have subsided. And now, after two years of off-field distractions, Boston College can begin to find out just how it will fare in its new home. After nearly two lame-duck years in the Big East, the Eagles take their first turn through the Atlantic Coast Conference this fall. And they'll get some very quick answers, what with a conference schedule that begins Sept. 17 against Florida State, ends at Maryland and includes trips to Death Valley and Blacksburg, Va., to face defending ACC champion Virginia Tech. Despite the uncertainty, however, the Eagles take a measure of confidence into their first season, knowing they beat the Hokies two seasons ago in Blacksburg, knocked off North Carolina in the Continental Tire Bowl (played just a couple hours from Chapel Hill) and came within one disappointing loss at Syracuse of claiming an outright Big East title and a BCS berth last season.
