Pat Hill has done more to legitimize the Western Athletic Conference on the national scene by playing anyone, anywhere, any time. Fresno State's 12 BCS wins since 2000 are second best of any non-BCS program (Utah has 13).
But unlike Boise State and Hawaii, Hill has never won a league title outright at Fresno State or received a BCS bid.
This irony is not lost on Hill or his legion of frenzied Fresno football fans who all want the same thing -- a chance at that huge payday on New Year's Day. The Bulldogs have a team capable of making some noise on the national scene, with 10 starters back on a solid offense and another six on a stingy defense.
Boise State and Hawaii were undefeated in the regular season with good enough nonconference schedules to convince the BCS computers that they belonged among the nation's elite. Last year, the key for Hawaii's trip to the Sugar Bowl was being ranked in the top 25 in the major preseason polls.
